English Composition as a Happening

The article, "English Composition as a Happening" by Charles Deemer explains why Deemer believes that the educational system is into a fixed erroneous state. The system is not laid out in a way that allows students to succeed as well as be prepared for a university. Deemer's main idea of this text is to explain why so many students are not ready for university level work. All that many students are doing is accepting that everything their teacher is telling them is true, while not thinking about it at all or why it is the way it is. This takes away the entire purpose for learning. Students need to be able to think and draw their own conclusions.

They may have received high marks in their English Composition class, but that could possibly mean that the student only swallowed the "teacher's" remarks in order to do well on the test, but did not actually consider and think about them. This will only tarnish the students educational future. Who cares if you were a 4.0 student in high school if you do not truly know the material? Will that matter in college? No, you can go from a 4.0 GPA in high school to a 1.0 GPA in college because of the lack of skills that you obtain. At times this is entirely the students fault, but other times it is because the student was not fully prepared by their previous teachers. Therefore, the student should not have to assume all of the responsibility of the fact that they were not taught correctly. Does that mean that the old teachers are the ones who pay for this mistake? Thats all that makes sense, right? Wrong! The students are the one who pay for other's mistakes. Is that fair? Absolutely not, but that does not stop it from happening. Charles Deemer believes that this process is terrible.

The only thing people can do to fix this, is to alter the educational system in a positive and promising way. Then possibly the students will be given the chance to earn the education that they deserve to earn. Although that does not mean every student will choose to earn their education, it is a step towards improving the education system for those who eagerly want it. What separates these two types of students is that one wants only to receive an education, while the other is set on earning their education. The education system needs to give all opportunities available.
